Advanced Battery Concepts Delivers 1.15 MW Storage System to Michigan Conservancy

Date:

The U.S. Department of Energy has granted final funding approval for an innovative energy storage project at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) in Traverse City, Michigan. This development marks a significant step forward for the project, which aims to enhance energy resilience through the integration of advanced battery technology.

At the heart of the project is a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system that will complement an existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic array at the GTRLC headquarters. This system will store excess solar energy for use during periods of low sunlight, thereby ensuring a more consistent and efficient utilization of renewable energy resources.

The project is supported by Congressionally Directed Spending, managed by the U.S. Department of Energy, and utilizes Advanced Battery Concepts’ (ABC) GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology. This technology is noted for its reduced lead content, maintaining the safety and recyclability found in traditional lead-based batteries, according to ABC. The batteries, which are produced in Michigan, underscore the state’s role in the U.S. energy storage supply chain.

Installation and commissioning of the energy storage system are set for the second quarter of 2027, as the project currently transitions into the procurement and manufacturing phase. The storage system will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BEâ„¢ enclosures, further demonstrating Michigan-based ABC’s commitment to advancing energy storage solutions.
