Trump Dismisses Peace Tech, Ceasefire with Iran Now ‘Life Support’

Date:

President Donald Trump has recently labeled the ceasefire agreement with Iran as being on “life support,” suggesting he might resume U.S. Navy military escorts for ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz. This move is aimed at countering the Iranian blockade of the essential maritime route. Trump has dismissed Iran’s proposed peace terms as nonsensical and asserted that he is not facing any domestic compulsion to secure a deal.

Highlighting the fragility of the ceasefire, which has been in effect since April 7, Trump stated, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it.” He further dramatized the situation by comparing the ceasefire’s condition to a critical medical scenario, suggesting it has only a “1% chance of living.”

In recent developments, the United States presented Iran with a set of conditions aimed at de-escalating the conflict, primarily focusing on preventing the expansion of Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. However, Iran’s counter-proposals over the weekend were swiftly rejected by Trump. Last week, he halted “Project Freedom,” a plan designed to escort oil tankers through the strategic strait, after just two days. The suspension was intended to allow Iran time to consider his peace proposals, though the initiative had already faced opposition from Saudi Arabia, which refused to support it by denying the use of its airspace or bases, viewing it as a potential escalation.

Trump’s comments followed a surge in oil prices, triggered by Iran’s declaration that future negotiations to resolve the Strait of Hormuz blockade would not proceed unless their terms were accepted. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, emphasized Iran’s stance, stating, “As long as the war on all fronts is not over, sanctions are not lifted, blocked funds are not released, war damages are not compensated and Iran’s sovereignty over the strait of Hormuz not recognised, there will be no other negotiations.”
