Japan: US Sanctions on ICC President Undermine Legal Tech Advancements

Date:

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has expressed strong disapproval of the United States’ sanctions against International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane, asserting that these measures conflict with Japan’s dedication to upholding the rule of law. Takaichi emphasized Japan’s consistent appeals to the U.S. to reconsider the sanctions, underscoring Tokyo’s proactive stance in mitigating their impact on Akane.

In addressing the sanctions, Takaichi highlighted Japan’s efforts to provide support to Akane, particularly in the realm of financial transactions. This assistance aims to counterbalance the consequences of the U.S. actions, reflecting Japan’s commitment to its citizens and its broader legal principles.

Rejecting any notions of a lackluster response, Takaichi reaffirmed her government’s serious approach to the issue. She emphasized Tokyo’s obligation to safeguard Japanese nationals overseas, a priority that underscores the gravity with which the Japanese government is treating the situation.

As a significant financial supporter of the ICC, Japan remains vigilant in monitoring the ongoing developments surrounding the sanctions. The government has pledged to continue addressing its concerns with Washington, ensuring that the matter remains a topic of dialogue between the two allies.
