Trump Cuts Nearly $1 Billion in Immigrant Services Funding Approved by Congress

Date:

In a contentious move, President Donald Trump has decided to cancel nearly $1 billion in spending that had been previously approved by Congress, focusing on funds designated for immigrant services and diversity-focused programs. The White House justified the cuts by labeling the targeted spending as wasteful or harmful and claimed that the decrease in illegal border crossings has rendered some of the funding unnecessary.

This decision has sparked criticism from several lawmakers, including Republican Senator Susan Collins, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee. She expressed concern over the lack of adequate consultation with Congress before the action was taken. Collins emphasized that the executive branch should not have the unilateral authority to determine the allocation of congressionally approved funds.

Democratic Senator Patty Murray also voiced her opposition, arguing that the funds had been bipartisanly approved for specific programs and should not be retracted. The cuts will affect funding for organizations that provide services to refugees, unaccompanied minors, and other immigrant communities.

The cancellation of funds involves a process known as a “pocket rescission,” where spending is effectively annulled at the end of the fiscal year, limiting Congress’s opportunity to review or contest the decision. The Government Accountability Office has raised questions about the legality of this approach.

This recent action is part of Trump’s broader strategy of using similar mechanisms to block significant amounts of foreign aid, highlighting ongoing tensions between the White House and Congress regarding presidential authority over federally approved spending.
