Major AI Firms Agree to Voluntary Safety Framework at White House Meeting

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that major artificial intelligence (AI) companies have reached a voluntary agreement designed to enhance safety oversight in AI development. This initiative, termed the “White House Accord on Super Intelligence,” encourages participating companies to institute strong internal controls for detecting potential issues within their AI systems.

The agreement calls for AI companies to collaborate with independent external auditors to ensure the efficacy of their safety measures. Additionally, companies are expected to form independent board committees to evaluate the outcomes of both internal and external safety assessments.

The accord is currently voluntary and lacks legal enforceability. However, there is an indication that these measures might eventually form the basis for future legislation or regulatory standards.

The White House meeting, which was pivotal in establishing this framework, included prominent figures from leading technology firms. Attendees comprised Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Elon Musk.

Trump emphasized the responsibility of the technology sector to self-monitor AI advancements while continuing to foster innovation. He has maintained that overly stringent regulations could impede the sector’s growth.

This agreement emerges as public and governmental scrutiny of AI safety intensifies, along with concerns about cybersecurity risks and the environmental and infrastructure demands of large data centers.
