Flexing his diplomatic muscle, Donald Trump has forbidden Israel from moving forward with any plan to annex the West Bank. The president’s forceful statement, “It’s not going to happen,” is a clear demonstration of American power and a signal that the US will not hesitate to intervene to prevent actions it deems contrary to its interests.
This show of strength came at a critical moment, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arriving in the US for the UN General Assembly. He was immediately confronted with this assertion of American authority, which directly challenges the agenda of the nationalist wing of his government.
The decision to flex US muscle on this issue appears to be a direct result of a successful lobbying campaign by a coalition of concerned allies. European and Arab nations had warned that a failure to intervene would have “grave consequences.” Trump’s action shows that their message was received and acted upon.
The issue at hand is the future of the West Bank, a territory with 700,000 Israeli settlers. The international community has long opposed any unilateral annexation, and Trump has now put the full weight of the US presidency behind that position.
This display of diplomatic strength is also part of a broader strategy aimed at resolving the Gaza crisis. The US is championing a 21-point peace plan to end the nearly two-year war. By demonstrating his willingness to take a hard line, Trump may be trying to create a new dynamic in the region that is more conducive to a comprehensive peace deal.
