The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, cleared the way for the Trump administration to slash hundreds of millions of dollars in research funding aimed at reducing federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The ruling lifts a previous court order that blocked $783 million in funding cuts.
While the court allowed these cuts to proceed, it blocked the administration from applying its anti-DEI guidance to future funding decisions. The decision enables the administration to cancel hundreds of ongoing grants as litigation continues.
Opponents, including several state attorneys general and public-health groups, argued that the cuts could cause “incalculable losses” in public health and disrupt critical scientific research, potentially derailing studies already in progress and hindering scientific breakthroughs.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, criticizing the majority for favoring the administration in emergency appeals. Lower-court judges had previously described the cuts as arbitrary and discriminatory, highlighting the potential harm to ongoing research projects.
