Sheinbaum Rebuts Trump’s Comments on Mexico’s Anti-Drug Efforts

Date:

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Mexico’s efforts in combating drug trafficking and organized crime. During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is aware of its challenges and is actively addressing them, while calling for the United States to examine its role in the cross-border drug crisis.

Sheinbaum highlighted the need for the U.S. to take more responsibility in tackling issues such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and the illegal flow of firearms into Mexico. She argued that these factors contribute significantly to the power of criminal organizations operating within Mexico, and stressed that the problem involves responsibilities on both sides of the border.

In her address, Sheinbaum questioned the measures the U.S. government is implementing to combat these issues, including the prosecution of drug traffickers and the prevention of illegal arms flows. She also called for increased efforts to address opioid consumption and addiction within the U.S.

Despite acknowledging the severity of drug production and trafficking, Sheinbaum defended her administration’s record, citing arrests made under Operation Swarm, a security initiative targeting criminal and corruption networks. She insisted that Mexican authorities have taken action against officials linked to organized crime when evidence supports such actions, irrespective of political affiliation.

Trump’s administration has previously urged Mexico to intensify its efforts against corruption and drug-related crime, pointing to actions taken by Mexican authorities as insufficient. In response, Sheinbaum called for greater transparency regarding U.S. efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking and domestic drug consumption, urging both nations to scrutinize their roles in addressing the drug crisis.
