In a night destined for the history books, Chloe Kelly once again rose as the hero, delivering the winning penalty that crowned England the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 champions. Facing the reigning world champions Spain in a tense final in Basel, the Lionesses overcame a one-goal deficit to secure victory in a dramatic penalty shootout, capturing hearts and rewriting English sporting history.
Spain took the lead through Mariona Caldentey’s header in the first half, capitalizing on their commanding possession. But true to their spirit, England responded with grit. Alessia Russo equalized in the 57th minute with a powerful header, set up by a precise cross from Kelly. It was yet another display of England’s hallmark resilience, having come from behind in every knockout match of the tournament.
As extra time passed with mounting pressure, both teams struggled to find the breakthrough. Heroics came in the form of goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who saved penalties from Caldentey and Aitana BonmatĂ in the shootout. Spain’s Salma Paralluelo also missed, firing wide. Despite an early VAR setback when Beth Mead’s goal was disallowed, England held their nerve. Patri Guijarro, Alex Greenwood, and Niamh Charles all converted before Kelly stepped up to seal the win.
Manager Sarina Wiegman celebrated her third straight European title, cementing her place among the game’s greats. Despite injuries, tactical reshuffles, and fierce opposition, her leadership brought England their most resilient campaign yet. The support from traveling fans—loud, proud, and united—echoed the transformative power of this team beyond the pitch.
From the grassroots to the global stage, the Lionesses have become a symbol of hope, courage, and unity. With Kelly once again delivering when it mattered most, England didn’t just win a title—they inspired a nation.
