Trump’s New Tech System Targets Visa Revocation for 200,000 Asylum Seekers

Date:

The Trump administration is set to cancel B1 and B2 non-immigrant visas for foreign nationals who entered the United States as short-term business or tourist visitors and subsequently applied for asylum. This move could potentially impact up to 200,000 individuals, as reported by government documents and U.S. officials. If executed, it could become one of the largest efforts to revoke visas in the nation’s history.

The State Department, in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security, is working to identify those visa holders who initially entered the country on temporary visitor visas but later sought asylum as a means to remain in the U.S. The administration views this step as part of a broader initiative to strengthen immigration enforcement and address what it perceives as exploitation of the asylum system.

According to officials, the revocation of visas would not automatically result in deportation. However, individuals with pending asylum applications could lose their status as business or tourist visitors, leading to their reclassification under the immigration system. This measure underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing perceived loopholes within the current immigration framework.

The decision reflects the administration’s ongoing efforts to reform immigration policies, which it argues are susceptible to misuse. By focusing on visa holders who have shifted their purpose of stay from temporary visits to asylum claims, the administration aims to curb practices it believes undermine the integrity of the immigration system.
