Engaging in regular physical activity may significantly reduce the risk of stroke and premature death, as highlighted by recent research exploring the long-term health benefits of staying active. This study, which tracked individuals both with and without atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm disorder, over approximately 13.5 years, revealed a notable link between varying levels of physical activity and the likelihood of experiencing a stroke or dying from any cause.
The results indicate that even minimal physical activity can yield substantial health advantages. Participants who maintained an active lifestyle demonstrated up to a 19% reduction in stroke risk and up to a 22% decrease in mortality risk compared to their less active counterparts. These benefits were especially pronounced for individuals living with atrial fibrillation, who showed a correlation between increased physical activity and a longer life expectancy.
For people with AFib, the study estimated life expectancy gains ranging from 0.50 to 1.15 additional years, depending on their activity levels. Those with low activity levels saw about a 0.50-year increase, moderate activity was linked to approximately 0.66 additional years, while higher activity levels could add as much as 1.15 years. This finding is particularly relevant given that atrial fibrillation can elevate the risk of blood clots and stroke, underscoring the importance of cardiovascular health for those affected by the condition.
Importantly, the research emphasizes that physical activity does not have to involve rigorous exercise routines or long-distance running. Simple activities such as walking, cycling, swimming, or even household tasks can contribute positively to an active lifestyle.
