Doctor Highlights Lesser-Known Lung Disease Symptoms Beyond Coughing

Date:

While a persistent cough is commonly viewed as a primary indicator of lung issues, its absence does not guarantee healthy lungs, according to Dr. Jeenam Shah, a consultant in chest medicine at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai. Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Dr. Shah emphasized that a lack of coughing should not be seen as a health certificate, highlighting other symptoms that might suggest underlying lung conditions.

Several lung diseases can progress silently without a regular cough, particularly in their early stages. Asthma, for instance, might manifest as breathlessness, wheezing, or chest tightness instead of a continuous cough. These symptoms often appear during exercise, at night, or after exposure to allergens, and may be mistaken for poor fitness or allergies.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is another condition where breathlessness can be a more significant warning sign than coughing. Individuals may notice a gradual decrease in their ability to perform physical activities like climbing stairs or walking uphill, often attributing these changes to aging rather than seeking medical advice. Smokers, in particular, should be aware of these subtle shifts in exercise capacity.

Lung cancer can develop without any symptoms initially, with some cases presenting a persistent or changing cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or recurrent chest infections as the disease progresses. People with a history of smoking or other risk factors are encouraged to consult with a healthcare professional to assess their risk, rather than waiting for symptoms to appear.

Other lung and circulation-related conditions, such as pulmonary hypertension and blood clots in the lungs, may also cause unexplained breathlessness without a persistent cough. Dr. Shah noted that pulmonary fibrosis is one condition where changes in breathing and exercise capacity might be noticed before significant coughing occurs. In such cases, patients may find themselves unusually tired or breathless during routine activities that were previously easy.

Dr. Shah advises individuals to seek medical attention if they experience unexplained or worsening breathlessness, wheezing, a decline in exercise capacity, recurrent chest infections, chest pain, coughing up blood, or unexplained weight loss. Depending on symptoms and risk factors, doctors might recommend spirometry, chest imaging, oxygen assessment, or other investigations to diagnose potential lung issues.
