Saudi Arabia Secures $24.3 Billion F-35 Deal from US

Date:

The United States has sanctioned a proposed sale of 48 F-35 stealth fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, a deal valued at $24.3 billion, pending Congressional approval. This significant military transaction underscores the expanding defense collaboration between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.

According to the U.S. State Department, the sale is intended to bolster Saudi Arabia’s defensive capabilities against potential threats and enhance its interoperability with American forces. The department emphasized that the transaction aligns with the U.S. policy to maintain Israel’s military advantage in the Middle East, assuring that the regional military balance will remain unaltered.

Saudi Arabia’s pursuit of the advanced F-35 aircraft has been long-standing, with the country seeking to enhance its aerial defense systems. Currently, Israel is the only Middle Eastern nation equipped with these fighter jets, and it has previously expressed reservations regarding any potential sale to Saudi Arabia.

This proposed agreement is part of a broader pattern of U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which includes a range of weaponry such as bombs, tank engines, and precision rocket system equipment. The expansion of military sales reflects ongoing strategic ties between Washington and Riyadh.

As the deal awaits legislative scrutiny, it is expected to face rigorous examination by Congress, particularly concerning the safeguarding of sensitive military technology. Additionally, there are concerns over Saudi Arabia’s increasing diplomatic and economic interactions with China, which could complicate the approval process.
