While Americans pressed on with business as usual during the Easter period, President Donald Trump reignited controversy by calling for the immediate dismissal of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Trump’s demand followed Powell’s stark warning that Trump’s proposed tariffs could trigger inflation and rising unemployment.
Trump has indicated that new tariffs targeting previously exempt sectors, including semiconductors and essential pharmaceuticals, are imminent. These measures are expected to add strain to already fragile supply chains and stoke tensions with international partners.
In a veiled rebuke, former President Joe Biden praised Harvard University for its resilience, a subtle counter to Trump’s decision to freeze federal funding to the institution and threaten its tax-exempt status. Harvard has been at the center of ongoing disputes with the current administration, accused of being out of step with national priorities.
Trump also hosted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday, reinforcing ties with his closest European ally. Dubbed the “Trump whisperer,” Meloni is navigating growing European discomfort as the U.S. prepares to enforce delayed 20% tariffs on EU goods.
In another geopolitical twist, Trump has reportedly halted an Israeli plan to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, favoring diplomatic avenues instead. This marks a rare restraint from a president known for his aggressive foreign policy stance and signals a potential shift toward broader global engagement.
