A term once relegated to science fiction and niche online communities has officially entered the mainstream. “Biohacking” has been named one of Collins Dictionary’s notable words of 2025, reflecting a growing cultural obsession with optimizing human health and longevity.
The dictionary defines “biohacking” as the activity of altering the natural processes of your body in an attempt to improve health. This can range from data-driven diets and ice baths to wearable technology and more experimental genetic interventions. Its inclusion on the list signifies a shift from passive health to active self-engineering.
The rise of “biohacking” in the 24-billion-word Collins Corpus shows it has become a central part of the wellness conversation. It represents a desire to take control of one’s own biology, often using the same data-driven principles that power the tech industry.
This word fits into a larger theme of control and adaptation on the 2025 list, which was won by “vibe coding.” While “vibe coding” is about controlling computers with language, “biohacking” is about controlling our bodies with technology and data.
Alongside other terms like “coolcation” (escaping heat) and “Henry” (financial frustration), “biohacking” highlights a key anxiety of 2025: a feeling that our natural state is not enough, and that we must actively intervene—in our health, our finances, and our environment—to thrive.
