Tesla’s highly anticipated Robotaxi debut has sparked a federal safety probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) following public outcry over videos showcasing erratic driving. The US’s main transportation safety regulator has requested information from Tesla after footage from the Austin, Texas, launch showed autonomous vehicles exceeding speed limits and veering into incorrect lanes. This immediate oversight highlights the rigorous standards for self-driving technology.
Despite Tesla’s extensive promotional efforts for the limited rollout, which involved pro-Tesla influencers showcasing the paid ride service, the very footage intended to highlight the technology’s capabilities has instead drawn the attention of the NHTSA. These videos appear to demonstrate the Robotaxis’ struggles in complying with fundamental traffic laws, raising significant concerns about their readiness for wider deployment.
Among the most troubling incidents captured on video was a Robotaxi misjudging a left turn, briefly entering an oncoming traffic lane, and then correcting its course over a double yellow line. Another clip featured a pro-Tesla YouTuber praising the car for exceeding the speed limit, a clear violation of traffic regulations. These widely shared examples underscore the challenges inherent in developing truly autonomous driving systems.
This new regulatory challenge arrives at a crucial juncture for Tesla, as the company faces declining sales and a substantial 71% drop in first-quarter profits for 2025. With Elon Musk having staked a significant part of Tesla’s future on the success of its Robotaxi program, the NHTSA’s investigation, combined with an ongoing probe into “Full-Self Driving,” places considerable pressure on the automaker to validate its autonomous technology and address public safety concerns.
