The US Mint has started producing a new commemorative $1 coin featuring former President Donald Trump, the US Treasury Department announced. This coin is part of the nation’s 250th-anniversary celebrations and is set for release this fall. While the design was approved earlier this year, the final version in production has a gold-colored finish instead of being made from solid gold.
The coin’s issuance has sparked controversy since federal law typically prohibits living presidents from being depicted on US currency. Nonetheless, Treasury officials assert that the secretary has the authority to approve such commemorative coin issues under certain conditions.
The front of the coin displays a portrait of Trump, accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the years “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” On the reverse, the coin features the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, along with the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent commented that the coin is designed to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism in America. He emphasized that it celebrates the country’s core values and unwavering commitment to freedom.
