A leading cardiologist says a simple, 10-second test can give you the “green light” for a long and active life. The one-legged stand acts as a traffic signal for your health; a steady performance is a clear sign to proceed with confidence, while a wobble is a yellow or even red light.
This health signal system is backed by a 2022 study that followed 1,700 adults. The research showed that those who got a “green light” on the balance test had a clear road ahead, while those who got a “red light” were at a higher risk of health roadblocks.
The study’s data quantified these signals. A green light—passing the 10-second test—was associated with a greater than 90% chance of seven more years of smooth sailing, free from disability. A red light indicated a need to stop and address underlying health issues.
The heart specialist explains that this is because balance is a fundamental requirement for safe movement and activity. It relies on the systems that allow you to navigate your world without incident. A red light in this system is a major warning of potential danger ahead.
If you are stuck at a red light, you can work to turn it green. The expert recommends a “driver’s education” course for your body. She suggests practices like yoga and Tai Chi to improve your coordination and stability, giving you the green light to proceed toward a long and active future.
