President Donald Trump has signaled a full and complex agenda for his meeting with President Xi Jinping, saying they “have a lot to talk about” as their trade war heats up.
The “big meeting” is set for Thursday in South Korea, during the APEC summit. Speaking from Tokyo, Trump was optimistic, saying, “I think it’s going to work out very well.”
The trade war has heated up considerably. A recent calm was broken by Chinese rare earth controls and a retaliatory US 100% tariff threat.
New US port fees and subsequent Chinese countermeasures have added to the friction.
Despite this, Trump called the upcoming talks “fantastic” and “great for everybody.”
Trump’s Asia trip has been building to this moment. His activities in Japan, including meeting PM Sanae Takaichi and addressing troops, were part of a broader push to discuss trade and American economic influence.
