US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenced a pivotal four-day visit to India on Saturday, with the primary aim of bolstering strategic alliances and enhancing collaboration across various sectors such as trade, defense, energy, and technology. This visit is strategically aligned with the forthcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue involving India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, set to address security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region.
Central to Rubio’s agenda are discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The dialogues are anticipated to concentrate on security in the Indo-Pacific, defense cooperation, and advancements in critical technologies such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence. These talks come amid rising apprehensions about China’s expanding influence in the region and aim to fortify resilient supply chains.
Trade relations will also be a focal point, especially in light of past tensions due to tariff measures under President Donald Trump that affected Indian exports. Both nations are keen to explore avenues for strengthening economic ties and mitigating trade disputes. Additionally, energy security discussions are expected to be significant, as the US seeks to increase its crude oil and LNG exports to India, alongside ongoing deliberations concerning India’s procurement of discounted Russian oil.
Defense collaboration remains a cornerstone of the bilateral talks, with India operating several American defense systems, including Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers, and C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. The discussions are also likely to cover joint production initiatives and cooperation in advanced defense and space technologies.
During his visit, Rubio will travel to several Indian cities including Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. Notably, in Kolkata, he is scheduled to visit the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, established by Mother Teresa, reflecting a broader cultural engagement during his diplomatic mission.
