A gastroenterologist has shared seven foods that are “liver-friendly” because they support the entire circulatory and metabolic system. A key focus is on foods that boost blood vessel function, which is critical for liver health.
The top recommendation for this is strawberries paired with dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more). This duo is “packed with flavanols and anthocyanins,” which are compounds “associated with improving blood vessel functioning and better cardiometabolic health.”
Other foods on the list also support blood flow. Watermelon with lime is recommended because its citrulline and vitamin C support nitric oxide production. Beetroot is also loaded with nitrates, which support the same nitric oxide pathways.
Beyond blood flow, the list supports other key functions. Beetroot also contains betaine, which helps the liver process fat. Cranberries support the gut-liver axis, and pomegranates help calm inflammation.
Finally, the expert includes foods for metabolic health. Raspberries (fiber and anthocyanins) and apples with cinnamon (pectin and other compounds) help regulate blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, and lipid levels, completing a holistic approach to liver care.
