In a bid to advance peace efforts, US negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held discussions in Kyiv on Sunday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy amid ongoing tensions with Russia. This meeting followed their talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day. Witkoff characterized the dialogue with Zelenskyy as “very constructive and substantive,” and expressed optimism about potentially initiating broader discussions involving the United States, Ukraine, and European nations in the near future.

The talks in Kyiv briefly included national security advisers from the UK, France, and Germany, reflecting a concerted international effort to mediate the conflict. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s interest in pursuing trilateral negotiations with the US and European partners as a pathway to advancing peace talks. He also reiterated the need for continued Western support as Ukraine braces for another harsh winter, with priorities focusing on air defense, energy assistance, and increased access to US liquefied natural gas.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, peace negotiations remain deadlocked, primarily due to unresolved disputes over territorial control in eastern Ukraine. Previous discussions have revolved around a 20-point peace framework co-developed by Washington and Kyiv, yet significant disagreements persist between Russia and Ukraine on several critical issues.

Meanwhile, the conflict shows little sign of easing, as Russian strikes continue to impact Ukrainian territory. Over the last day, Ukrainian authorities reported at least eight fatalities and 69 injuries across the country. Kyiv has also been subjected to sustained drone assaults, while grappling with a scarcity of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles. As the war nears its fifth year, Ukrainian officials remain vigilant over potential Russian attacks on energy infrastructure and the likelihood of intensified strikes during the winter months.
