Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has expressed that the United States’ sanctions imposed on International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane contradict Japan’s dedication to upholding the rule of law. Japan, being a prominent financial supporter of the ICC, has consistently advised the United States against such punitive measures.

Prime Minister Takaichi emphasized that Japan has taken proactive steps to mitigate the effects of these sanctions on Akane, particularly by offering assistance with financial transactions. She strongly refuted any claims suggesting that Japan’s response has been inadequate, underscoring the seriousness with which Tokyo is addressing the situation.

Takaichi stressed Japan’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad, asserting the government’s responsibility in ensuring their protection. The Japanese government remains vigilant in monitoring the situation and is prepared to communicate any concerns directly to Washington when deemed necessary.

As the situation unfolds, Japan continues to prioritize maintaining its support and cooperation with the ICC, while balancing its diplomatic relations with the United States. The issue highlights the complexities involved in international law and diplomacy, where Japan seeks to navigate its role as an advocate for the rule of law on the global stage.
