Carmel-by-the-Sea’s Sunset Center is set to commemorate a century since the opening of the original Sunset School with a free community event on October 25, 2026. This celebration will also kick off a five-year initiative, “Century of Creativity | 1926–2031,” which will culminate in 2031, marking 100 years since the opening of the center’s historic theater auditorium. The event, taking place from 1 to 4 p.m., promises a multitude of attractions, including live performances, art displays, and historical exhibits, all designed to celebrate the center’s rich cultural heritage.
The lineup of performances scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. will feature an impressive array of local talent. Attendees can look forward to performances by the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, Carmel Music Society, and the Carmel High School Chamber Singers, among others. These performances will take place both in the historic 718-seat theater and on the outdoor terrace, ensuring a memorable experience for all who attend. In addition to these cultural showcases, the event will also offer campus tours, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to engage with the community’s artistic legacy.
Among the highlights of the day is the Sunset Legacy Wall, a community art project encouraging visitors to share their artwork, memories, and messages reflecting the significance of the Sunset Center in their lives. Families will also have the chance to engage in creative activities like rock painting. The celebration will further feature live art demonstrations, music and photography programs, wellness activities, and guided tours of the historic property, all contributing to a vibrant and diverse cultural experience.
An archival exhibition will also be on display, tracing the transformation of Sunset Center from a school campus into a pivotal regional cultural hub. Local organizations such as the Carmel Heritage Society, Harrison Memorial Library, The Carmel Foundation, and the Carmel Residents Association will participate, enriching the event with their unique perspectives and contributions. Complimentary refreshments will be provided, with additional food and beverage options available for purchase from Sunset Center concessions.
