The informal gathering of European leaders in Washington is, in effect, a summit aimed at shaping the future of peace in Ukraine. Their mission is to support President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and to present a unified vision for a just and lasting settlement that directly counters Donald Trump’s pro-Russia proposal.
This “bodyguard” operation is Europe’s bid to take control of the diplomatic narrative. Rather than reacting to a deal imposed by Washington, the leaders are proactively defining the principles that must guide any peace process.
The core tenets of their vision are clear: respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, robust long-term security guarantees, and a military strong enough to deter future aggression—the “steel porcupine” model. They are also advocating for Ukraine’s integration into European institutions like the EU.
By presenting this coherent and comprehensive alternative, the European leaders are not just opposing Trump’s plan; they are offering a better one. This summit is their chance to persuade their American ally that the path to a stable, secure future lies not in a quick fix, but in a principled, long-term investment in a free and whole Ukraine.
