Colombia’s justice system has made history by convicting former President Álvaro Uribe of witness tampering, sending a strong message that legal impunity for political elites is no longer tolerable.
The case originated in 2012, when Uribe attempted to discredit Senator Iván Cepeda through allegations that were eventually dismissed. The Supreme Court found instead that Uribe had contacted witnesses inappropriately.
A former paramilitary testified that Uribe encouraged him to retract damaging statements. This, coupled with other evidence, led to the guilty verdict in a trial involving dozens of witnesses.
As the nation awaits Uribe’s sentencing, the conviction stands as a milestone in Colombia’s push for transparency and equal justice under the law.
